In the beginning of August this year, Subian Power met with a delegation from Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan in Russia, for an extensive visit and technical tour of the transformer factory. The delegation visited the production workshop, inspected finished products, spoke to the engineers, and left knowing what it meant to work with a manufacturer of transformers from China. The meeting has transformed from just a routine supplier evaluation into the beginning of a real partnership.

This trip was not only a courtesy visit, but it showed that changes are happening in the electrical market of Russia. For Subian Power, this visit was a chance not only to present its products, but to demonstrate its approach to its partners which is that trust is built on engineering, quality is proven, and cooperation is created step by step.

Rising demand in the Russian market for high-quality Chinese transformers.

Why Russia Is Turning to Chinese Transformers

The Russian Federation has a total of eleven time zones and is characterized by one of the most difficult climatic conditions in the world. The power supply system of the entire country needs to operate correctly under extreme cold temperatures, significant temperature variations, and often inaccessible territories. The ongoing process of modernization, industrial growth, and improvement of the power grid boosts the demand for reliable transformers and distribution equipment.

Chinese manufacturers have come to this region with an impressive combination of low prices, high capacity, and technical maturity. Over the last twenty years, China’s transformer industry has progressed from a low-cost solution to a global supplier of transformers operating in accordance with the international standards (IEC), as well as satisfying GOST requirements in the Russian Federation. This provides buyers in Kazan and other cities with products offering the same qualities as the goods of established Western brands but without lengthy delivery period and high prices.

The guests from Kazan were straightforward about their requirements. They wanted to have a partner that will guarantee delivery of high-quality products each time, respond to technical inquiries without delay, and ensure the successful operation of the equipment after the delivery. These were exactly the expectations we were able to meet during the meeting with our guests, and we were glad to prove it.

A Warm Welcome and a Serious Inspection

The delegation came to our facility with a specific purpose in mind. Instead of just walking around the premises, they were armed with a checklist that included much more than what we typically expect from a client – the delegation had prepared a detailed list of questions touching on the sourcing of raw materials, winding techniques, insulation systems, testing protocols, and quality tracking procedures. We were happy to answer all their questions. This is because serious clients asking serious questions are exactly what we are looking for – this signifies a partnership that will last for years to come, rather than a one-off deal.

The visit started with a small presentation held in our meeting room where our sales and technical teams introduced the history of Subian Power, scale of manufacturing operations, products, and export experience. We presented some case studies of completed international projects, demonstrating the flexibility of our designs in relation to the grid parameters, voltage classes, and environmental contexts the projects were implemented in.

The delegation from Kazan touring Subian Power’s production workshop.

Walking the Production Line Together

At the factory, guests are introduced to the care taken during the production process by showing them where it actually starts, and how every incoming item, be it a metal conductor made out of copper or aluminum, alloyed silicon steel, insulation materials, or transformer oil, is checked prior to slipping into production. The guests learned that quality does not come at the end of the production line but is controlled at the very first step, as the first raw materials are verified before starting the manufacturing process.

Then the guests moved to the winding shop comprised of highly qualified winding operators. They were able to observe the winding process taking place, where wire coils were fabricated with regards to specified mechanical characteristics. The engineers explained to guests how proper design, insulation, and drying play their role in reliability of the product. The guests had many questions on how to reduce moisture content and dry the transformer, and our team was able to answer them all exactly because they are not just theorists but hands-on manufacturers.

The tour went on including steps of core assembly, tanking process as well as vacuum oil-filling process before testing begins. It is worthy of note that throughout the tour, the guests paid great attention to cleanliness and order around and the documentation accompanying each work order. The importance of these minor details is known only to a savvy buyer who understands how clean the order of the manufacturer speaks for the quality of the product. By the time the guests found themselves at the testing station, the mood has shifted from cautious to quite confident.

Proving Quality in the Testing Bay

The testing facility is the place where a transformer maker gets the claims validated or disproved and the manufacturer is engaged in regular, type, and special tests in line with the established standards both international and the ones demanded by the client. During the tour, the delegation was made aware of all the tests carried out on the device – starting with the determination of winding resistance up to the verification of partial discharges.

The visitors want to particular attention to losses and temperature rises as they are considered important parameters of operation effectiveness and efficiency and influence the cost of operation and the reliability of transformers during the long and cold winters in Russia. The tests were quite illustrative and the guests were informed how test report information was derived including the method of supervision over the tests and its traceability. There is a transparent attitude in the industry in view of the fact that the unreliable test result could lead to devastating consequences.

Meeting GOST and International Standards

A key point that came up repeatedly during the visit was compliance. All equipment that is entering the market in Russia must comply with the GOST standards, which is why the customers want to be sure that their foreign suppliers know about these standards and do not treat them casually. We explained to the visitors what we do in order to ensure that the designs and papers produced by Subian Power comply with the standards the customers must meet, as well as how we deal with certification, marking, and documentation so that the units pass through customs and installation without unexpected surprises.

Our experience with exporting to a wide range of markets taught us that standards should not be treated as barriers but rather as a common language. When a manufacturer and a customer have the same parameters for insulation values, losses, and testing, everything is clear, and the cooperation speeds up. The delegation realized that our representatives know both IEC and GOST standards very well, so they could immediately tell where the two systems have common topics and where the design process must be adjusted.

Capacity, Lead Times, and Delivery Reliability

The value of quality diminishes if suppliers fail to meet delivery dates. The delegation asked many questions about our output capacity, backlog, and delivery times for custom and standard products. We took them through our operating cycle, including order confirmation, project design, materials procurement, production, and export packaging. According to us, making the timeline clear is a gesture of respect: our partners deserve to receive the right times instead of empty promises.

We covered logistics, since the delivery to Russia requires special planning. From protective packaging that can withstand long rail transportation to all paperwork allowing shipment delivery across borders – delivery issues can stop the project. By giving straightforward answers to the questions, we proved that Subian Power looks well beyond its factory gate.

Engineering Conversations That Build Confidence

One of the most remarkable experiences during this visit occurred outside of the production line in a calm technical discussion. The engineers and specialists compared their notes regarding Tatarstan’s grid conditions, load profiles, temperature ranges, and the requirements from Russian utility companies to suppliers. This discussion enabled the parties to go beyond general sales conversations and start specific project planning.

The discussions included developing design solutions for cold climates, such as insulation classes, oil types, and cooling systems for the area. Other important aspects covered during the discussions included bushings, tap changers, accessories, and documentation for customs clearance and commissioning. Involving the customer in these discussions allowed demonstrating Subian Power’s vision as an engineering partner rather than just a box supplier.

More Than a Transaction: A Shared Vision

The delegation indicated that what impressed them the most was that Subian Power demonstrated its concern for the success of their clients. A transformer is an investment for years to come; it is not something that companies replace frequently or easily. So, selecting a vendor is actually selecting a supplier that will be helping them in the case of repairs, technical assistance and in the cases of growth in the future.

While the delegation was here, we stressed our dedication to good after-sales service. There are many barriers to international cooperation, including time zones, languages, distances and we were very open about how we deal with these obstacles: we have dedicated contacts for each project, we have a good and clear documentation, we reply promptly to our clients’ inquiries and we are always ready to go where the situation brings us.

A New Bridge Between Kazan and Subian Power

As the visit came to an end, the aura was that of real optimism. The group departed with sample papers, technological specifications, and, crucially, real experience that one could hardly get from any papers. They had been seeing the people, the processes and the quality standards made behind Subian Power brand and discovered the manufacturer which is eager to satisfy the requirements of the Russian market with usability and professionalism at once.

Another achievement we got was understanding the needs of the clients and the conditions in which their equipment should be operating. It is such kind of mutual understanding that makes the real basis of long-term cooperation. The distance between Kazan and our plant is really considerable on the map but it is visits like this one that take away this distance turning it into a handshake, a cup of tea and a common goal.

Subian Power considers this visit as the first page of a long story rather than its end. With the growing need for quality Chinese transformers all over Russia we are ready to be of assistance to our partners providing them with quality products and good service. We are thankful to our Kazan friends for their time and trust and ready to participate in the process of construction of the bridge of cooperation bringing electric energy for many years ahead.

Partner With a Transformer Manufacturer You Can Trust

Subian Power is your optimal choice if you are undertaking any of the following: upgrading a substation, enlarging an industrial facility, or looking for distribution transformers for a demanding grid. Our customers from Russia and far and wide are welcome to come to our site and take a look at how we do things. They will get to see for themselves the quality and efforts behind every transformer we make. Don’t hesitate to reach out and let us know about your project.

Partnership between countries often finds its origin in a handshake on the production floor.
