Medium Voltage Switchgear We Manufacture

Metal-enclosed fixed and withdrawable switchgear, ring-main units and associated panels for 12kV, 20kV and 24kV systems with vacuum breaker technology.

What Is 20 kV Switchgear?

20 kV switchgear is the metal-enclosed equipment that distributes power on a 20kV network – the class used widely in Europe and parts of Asia where 20kV is the standard distribution voltage. Each panel contains a vacuum circuit breaker or switch-fuse combination, current and voltage transformers, protection relays and busbars, all inside an earthed metal enclosure.

Choosing 20kV switchgear for a project means matching the network voltage (with a rated voltage of 24kV for equipment), the busbar and feeder currents, and the fault level the panels must withstand. Factory assembly and type testing give the operator a verified, safe design rather than a site-built assembly.

  • 24 kV equipment class – covers 20kV networks with standard margins.
  • Vacuum breaker technology – maintenance-light interruption inside each panel.
  • Fixed or withdrawable – configurations for different maintenance philosophies.
  • Metal-enclosed & earthed – arc-tested compartments protect operators.
  • Protection integrated – relay, CT, VT and metering per feeder.
  • Factory tested – routine checks and type-tested designs.

Panel Types We Offer

The right configuration depends on the duty and the operator’s maintenance practice:

Withdrawable breaker panels

the breaker can be racked out for maintenance; common for industrial and utility feeders.

Fixed-type panels

a simpler, lower-cost arrangement with the breaker fixed in place.

Ring-main units

compact switch-fuse or breaker units for secondary substations and loops.

20 kV Switchgear Technical Range

Parameter Specification
Rated voltage 24 kV (for 20kV systems)
Rated current 630 – 3,150 A
Breaking capacity 25 / 31.5 kA
Configuration fixed / withdrawable / RMU
Internal arc arc-tested per standard
Protection overcurrent, earth-fault, optional directional
Standards IEC 62271-200 / GB 3906

Key Specification Data for 20 kV Panels

The figures that decide the panel size and cost are the busbar rating, the feeder current, the short-circuit (fault) level the assembly must withstand, and the internal arc rating. For a 20kV system, 630A feeders are typical for distribution duty, rising to 1,250-3,150A for incoming and large industrial supplies.

Protection is usually overcurrent and earth-fault per feeder, with directional or differential protection where the network requires it. Modern relays also give metering and communication, reducing the number of separate instruments in the panel.

Installation and Site Considerations

Metal-enclosed panels are installed indoors in a switch room or in outdoor kiosks, depending on the project. The room needs adequate ventilation, cable access from below or above, and space for breaker withdrawal where withdrawable panels are used.

Earthing and cable termination follow the local code; our drawings include the recommended clearances, cable zones and fixing details so the contractor can prepare the room before the panels arrive.

Panel Assembly and Test Capability

Busbar fabrication, breaker mounting, wiring and high-voltage testing are all performed in-house, so each panel arrives with its test records and wiring documentation.

10 kV, 20 kV or 35 kV – Which Distribution Level?

The choice is usually fixed by the existing network. Where the operator runs a 20kV system – common in parts of Europe and Asia – 24kV-class switchgear is the standard equipment. 12kV equipment serves 10kV and 11kV networks, and higher classes serve 33kV and 35kV systems.

If a project is free to choose, 20kV carries more power per feeder than 10kV with lower losses for the same load, at a higher equipment cost. Our engineers help evaluate the level against the local standard, the load density and the available protection practice before quoting the panels.

Choosing a 20 kV Switchgear Manufacturer

Verify the type-test certificates – particularly internal arc classification, rated short-time withstand and breaker breaking tests – for the exact voltage and current class. Then compare busbar material, enclosure protection (IP rating) and the protection relay options the manufacturer supports.

Subian manufactures the panels and can coordinate the transformer and LV board in the same project, with ISO9001, ISO14001, ISO45001, CE and UL certified systems. Drawings, test reports and spare-part support are part of the delivery scope.

Ask how the manufacturer handles protection coordination and relay settings: a supplier that engineers the scheme, not just the panels, saves commissioning time on site.

Certifications & Quality Assurance

Our switchgear production runs under ISO9001, ISO14001 and ISO45001 systems with CE and UL certification and type-tested panel designs.

FAQs

20 kV Switchgear FAQ

Questions buyers ask when specifying 20kV switchgear for networks and projects.

What is 20kV switchgear?
20kV switchgear is the metal-enclosed switching and protection equipment used on 20kV distribution networks – the standard primary distribution voltage across much of continental Europe. Because equipment is designed for a rated voltage above the system voltage, panels for 20kV systems are built to the 24kV equipment class, giving the required clearance and insulation margin.
What is the difference between 12kV and 24kV switchgear?
12kV and 24kV switchgear are distinguished by the equipment class: 12kV panels serve 10-11kV networks, 24kV panels serve 20kV networks (and sometimes 22kV). The 24kV class needs larger phase and earth clearances, bigger vacuum interrupters and more substantial busbar support, which is why a 20kV panel costs more than the equivalent 12kV design at the same current rating.
What are the main types of 20kV switchgear?
Three configurations dominate: fixed (non-withdrawable) panels with a fixed vacuum circuit breaker, withdrawable (truck-type) panels where the breaker is on a carriage for fast maintenance, and ring main units (RMU) for compact distribution points and secondary substations. Withdrawable gear suits sites where downtime matters; RMUs suit radial network connections where space is limited.
How do I select a 20kV switchgear panel?
Selection starts from the fault level (short-circuit rating, typically 20-25kA for 3s at 20kV), the rated current of the incoming and outgoing feeders (630A-3,150A), and the internal arc rating (IAC class) the site specification demands. Then choose fixed vs withdrawable, add protection and metering, and confirm the cable termination arrangement – top or bottom entry – against the switch room design.
What is the internal arc rating of a switchgear panel?
The internal arc classification (IAC) states that an assembly can contain an internal arc fault for a declared time – usually 0.3s or 1s – without endangering personnel. It is written as IAC AFLR or a similar code covering access side, and verified by type test. Specifying an IAC-rated panel is standard practice for 20kV rooms where operators work alongside live panels.
How much does 20kV switchgear cost?
Cost is driven by rated current, fault level, breaker count, IAC rating and protection content rather than by voltage alone. A typical incoming-feeder panel with a vacuum breaker costs more than an outgoing feeder panel of the same rating because of the higher current and additional protection. For accurate numbers, send the single-line diagram and fault level – manufacturers quote against the actual panel schedule.
