Transformers for European Markets

Oil-immersed and dry-type distribution and power transformers for European voltage systems, with EU ecodesign loss levels, custom ratios and full project documentation.

What Is a European Power Transformer?

A European power transformer is not a different machine – it is a transformer engineered to the standards, voltage systems and efficiency requirements of European networks. In practice this means IEC 60076 design, a primary matched to the local system (20kV, 10kV, 33kV or higher), a 400V or 11kV secondary, 50Hz, and no-load and load-loss values that meet the EU ecodesign regulation limits for the applicable rating.

For buyers, the practical difference shows in documentation and testing: European projects expect type-test reports, loss certificates and CE-consistent conformity evidence. Working with a factory that routinely exports to Europe removes the back-and-forth on documentation and standards interpretation.

  • European voltage systems – 20/0.4kV, 10/0.4kV, 33/11kV and higher.
  • EU ecodesign loss levels – designed to meet the applicable loss limits.
  • IEC 60076 design – with EN-compatible test documentation.
  • Oil & dry type – both technologies from one factory.
  • 50 Hz standard – 60Hz available for non-European feeders.
  • Export experience – EU project documentation as standard.

What We Supply for European Networks

The right technology depends on the installation and the network operator’s practice:

Oil-immersed distribution type

the workhorse of European distribution, from pole-mounted units to substation transformers.

Dry-type (cast resin)

for indoor and high-rise installations where fire safety dictates oil-free designs.

Power transformers

larger units for sub-transmission and industrial sites, engineered to project specifications.

EU Ecodesign Loss Levels – What Buyers Should Know

Since 2015, distribution transformers placed on the EU market must meet efficiency limits set by the Ecodesign Regulation (EU) No 548/2014, with stricter Tier 2 limits applying from July 2021. The limits are expressed as maximum no-load and load losses for each rating, so the guarantee of compliance lives in the measured loss values.

When comparing quotations, ask for the guaranteed no-load and load losses for your rating and check them against the applicable limit. Two factories quoting the same price can differ by a meaningful amount of yearly loss; for a fleet order the difference is significant.

We confirm the loss figures on the technical sheet and measure them again in the routine test report, so the ecodesign class is evidenced rather than assumed.

Typical European Installation Types

On a 20kV network, distribution transformers are commonly installed in compact substations feeding 400V consumers, or pole-mounted in rural areas at smaller ratings. On 10kV systems the pattern is similar with different ratings. Industrial sites with a private HV intake use power transformers stepped to their internal voltage.

The installation type decides the enclosure, protection and vector group. Our engineers confirm these details from the network operator’s specification before the design is finalised.

Engineering and Manufacturing for Export

European orders follow the same controlled production path – core, winding, drying, assembly and testing – with documentation prepared for the destination market from day one.

European Power Transformer Quotation

Send the voltage system, rating, loss specification and any tender requirements, and our engineers will confirm the design on drawings and issue a factory quotation with the documentation list for your project.

Buying Direct vs Through a European Distributor

European buyers typically source through local distributors, who carry stock, handle warranty locally and speak the market’s language. Buying factory-direct suits project and volume buyers who need custom designs, lower unit cost or documentation tailored to a specific tender.

The two are not exclusive: many distributors place private-label orders with the factory and add local stock and service. Our OEM programme is built for exactly that relationship, with the factory holding the manufacturing quality and the distributor holding the local relationship.

Choosing a Transformer Supplier for a European Project

The decisive documents are the type-test report against IEC 60076, the loss certificate confirming the ecodesign class, and the routine test report of the delivered unit. Check also that the supplier routinely handles the specific documentation your country requires.

Subian manufactures transformers under ISO9001, ISO14001, ISO45001, CE and UL certified systems, with a 110 kV type-test report in the documentation set. Our export team prepares project files for European utilities, EPC firms and distributors.

Finally, compare how the supplier handles specifications and drawings before production – a factory that confirms the design on drawings and agrees the loss values in writing reduces risk at acceptance.

Certifications & Quality Assurance

Our transformer production runs under ISO9001, ISO14001 and ISO45001 systems with CE and UL certification and type-test evidence to 110 kV class.

FAQs

European Power Transformer Manufacturer & Supplier FAQ

Questions about sourcing transformers engineered for European networks and standards.

What kind of power transformer do I need for a European project?
For a project connected to a European network you need a transformer matched to the local system: 50Hz, with a primary voltage from the common European range (e.g. 20kV, 10kV, 33kV or 66/110kV for larger sites) and a secondary to your load voltage. Confirm the exact network voltage and the applicable standard – IEC 60076 is the design base, with EN 50464 or the EU Ecodesign loss classes applying for distribution transformers in the EU.
Who are the major transformer manufacturers in Europe?
European and global suppliers such as Hitachi Energy, Siemens Energy, GE Vernova and Schneider Electric, plus national manufacturers, supply the European market. Many utilities and contractors also source from Chinese factories that build to IEC/EN standards with CE-relevant certification, type tests and EU Ecodesign-compliant losses, which is the common route for cost-effective OEM supply. Evaluate any supplier on type test evidence and reference deliveries, not brand alone.
How do I convert European power to US power?
European networks supply 50Hz, 230/400V (single/three-phase); US systems use 60Hz, 120/240V and 480V. Changing the voltage alone needs a step-down or step-up transformer with the right ratio; changing frequency needs a frequency converter, because a transformer cannot change frequency. For an installation you usually take the local 50Hz supply, transform to the required voltage, and convert frequency only if 60Hz equipment must be fed.
Can I use European voltage equipment in the USA?
Not directly: the voltage and frequency differ (230/400V 50Hz in Europe versus 120/240V or 480V 60Hz in the USA). Equipment rated for 50Hz can overheat or run at the wrong speed on 60Hz, and voltage mismatch will damage most loads. Use a properly rated transformer plus a frequency converter where 50Hz-rated equipment must run, and always check the nameplate rating of each device.
Why are distribution transformers in Europe usually 20kV or 10kV primary?
European distribution evolved around a small number of standard primary voltages: 20kV dominates much of continental Europe, 10kV and 11kV are common in other regions, and 33kV is used in parts of the UK. Standardising the voltage lets utilities stock fewer transformer ratings and switch designs. The correct primary for your project is fixed by the local network operator’s declared voltage, not by choice.
